Since the war and the combination of the fire and lightning, everything was changed. Riani wasn't used to the change yet, even after 2 years. It seemed like everyday she would walk the cliff tops, enjoying the silence and privacy. From her favourite spot, just a few meters from the treeline of the woods, she could see the shore of Ombra, the island a mile or so from the mainland. On many days it looked deserted. On others, the animals that had somehow got on the island roamed the beaches.
Riani had spent the last hour dawdling along the cliff's edge to get to her spot. Her mind had been full of training skills all morning during the session and now that she had the afternoon to herself, it was a no brainer where she wanted to be. Before the war, had she tiem to herself, she would have spent it hunting in the woods with Conall, but there was another thing the war had changed. As she walked, she tied her hair into a plait and revealed the tattoo on her shoulder, just high enough so she could see it when she looked. The way the black and white seemed to work together was so wrong. She sat on the edge of the cliff and watched the shores of the island. Her feet dangled over the edge, and she knocked a stone down into the water. Her eyes followed the ripples it caused until she couldn't separate the ripples from the waves.

It had been nearly two years since Sunil stepped foot onto the mainland. Two years ago, he was a boisterous young man with a mind for conquest, one full of women and mischief and chaos. He had been carefree, a ruffian who took action without fear of consequences. He stole, he murdered, he seduced, he laughed. He was hated and loved all the same, a vagrant to every tribe that existed, yet no matter how much of an outcast he was, he managed to weasel his way into the hearts of many. That was before the war. Before the war, when life was eternal and wounds always healed. Without a doubt, every single person who lived through the fighting and became a part of the shift in Kingdoms had changed, for better or for worse. Even though Sunil held no direct part in any of the violence, their preoccupation sparked a sudden interest with him.
And suddenly, one day, he was gone.
Oh, but Sunil had not forgotten. He had planted the seeds of fear into the hearts of a few. He reminded them not to forget about the black-eyed man who could wield shadows with his fingertips. In his disappearance, he felt little fear that his warnings had been cast aside. But today, two years later, Sunil emerged from a shallow cave nestled in the cliffs on the shores of Ombra, and he resolved to pay a visit to one very special individual. With some kind of premonition, he knew he would be able to find her.
The man knew nothing of sailing, but a long-term colleague of his hastily prepared his small sailboat to accommodate the Monarch, and by mid-morning, they set off towards the shores of Caldo. Theirs was the most direct path to reach the mainland, which suited the land-bound Sunil just fine. Though the trip took little more than a day, once the bottom of the boat struck sand, he scurried quickly from its deck onto dry land again. Tall, magnetic cliffs once belonging to Lightning towered above him, and he lifted his black eyes towards the top. There, high above him, legs dangled over the edge. A grin plastered itself to his lips. Surely, Riani had seen his ship coming from his shoreline.
Unfortunately, that made it impossible for him to sneak up on her to give her a scare, though he was sure his visit would be unsettling enough. The cliffs of Ombra had made him a quick climber in a short amount of time, and before long, he navigated the jagged edges like a staircase before stepping out only a few feet from her. He stopped where he stood, a man different than the boy she saw two years prior. He was broader, though still angular, just as unkempt, but in the place of boyish foolery hovered an air of authority he had previously held only in arrogance. He tipped his head to her as though he had seen her only yesterday.
“Why hello, little lamb.” His voice came out in its usual, sensual purr. “I hope you didn’t miss me too much.”

TAKE A BREATH TAKE IT DEEP CALM YOURSELF HE SAYS TO ME IF YOU PLAY YOU PLAY FOR KEEPS TAKE THE GUN AND COUNT TO THREE & i'm sweating now moving slow no time to think my turn to go AND YOU CAN SEE MY HEART BEATING YOU CAN SEE IT THROUGH MY CHEST The sun was as glorious as it always was. Riani basked in it's warm glow as it worked it's magic over her. The light to bright to handle, she closed her eyes and just let her worries float away on the breeze. A deep inhale of the sea air and she felt safe. Upon opening her eyes, she heard something below that interrupted the rush of the waves. She peered over the edge to see a boat on the shore, a guy inside working. The sight was not that common in this land, more a hobby you'd see in Aver.
Riani sat back and pondered for a few seconds, before returning her eyes to the island ahead. Something plodded along the beach, slow and rhythmic like the waves. Riani smiled at the shadowed figure and sighed in her relaxed state. She'd have to go back soon, but something inside her wanted to stay here. She drew her legs back from over the edges of the cliffs and as she stood back up from her seat on the edge, someone started appearing over the top of the cliff. Riani watched in a sort of amazement, even though in the pit of her stomach a fear began to grow. She recognized this incomer, the unkempt appearance, the annoying air of arrogance and authority. But what really drove it home was the eyes. Those black pools of such darkness that looked straight through you. The voice was older, but still the same tone. It was strangely sensual and alluring but still made the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end. One of her nightmares was finally coming true.
And there was now nothing she could do.
She was stuck to the spot, caught in his glare. Stunned by his words. Little lamb... it was what he'd always called her. Her breath escaped her as if she'd been winded. "What are you doing here, Sunil?" Her voice came out croaky, as if she hadn't spoken in a while. It was mainly because of her shock at seeing him after 2 years, and the last time she'd seen him, he'd just murdered his father then freaked her out with his power. She remembered watching the shadows leak around of him, reaching out towards her. Involuntarily, she took a step back.

Ah, Sunil remembered that face clearly. The spark of fear in her crimson eyes, though the rest of her always went rigid to stubbornly try to prove he didn’t make her skin crawl unnervingly. It was as if it were only yesterday that Sunil was in the midst of killing his father that the young woman had come upon him again. By the looks of it, she still relived that memory night after night. She stood rooted to the spot, a mixture of shock and terror and misery washing over her. Sunil, in contrast, still stood lightly poised at the edge of the cliff he’d just climbed, an easy expression on his face, though in his black eyes lingered all of the intentions that Riani knew and loathed.
She took an uneasy step backwards, and Sunil raised a hand casually. Even her voice gave away her dread. “Now now, did I frighten you?” his voice dripped with venomous honey. That sly smile of his lingered to his lips, his signature look. He took a long, fluid step towards her. “I simply thought it’s been far too long that I’ve paid a visit, and I found myself missing you.” Only half a lie, but he knew the riddles he gave her always managed to crawl under her skin, and it always seemed as though she couldn’t decipher whether she should be frightened or enraged.
Another step closer, and he bowed down at the waist to her, sweeping one hand outward in a gallant show of respect. Luckily, for Riani, his visit to her came with very little pretenses. It was true, he mostly came her just to get a reaction, to peek in and remind the Great Island that he still existed, and was very alive and well. Call it his professional diplomacy. “It seems like the new Kingdom’s been treating you well, my dear.” He stood erect again and cocked his head to the side with a languid grin. “Though I imagine it’s a great deal more boring without me.”
Ah, how he felt young again! His enjoyment was nearly palpable. Too long had he waited to pay the mainland a visit. He had started growing sour over there in the Island of Ombra.

His posture had been so relaxed, so debonaire that he could have been dropped anywhere in the world and looked like he was supposed to be there. Riani didn't take her eyes off him, as if she was transfixed by him but it was really for fear that if she looked away he would try something. She folded her arms tight against her chest, her hands clutched in fists. Her eyes tightend at his words and she almost laughed in hatred. "I would care to bet you never thought once of me in our time apart. I know the same is true of me for you." She lied, hoping her voice didn't give away the truth of those words. Although, it was most likely he already knew she was conflicted with nightmares of his smug face.
It would be wrong to say Riani was not surprised by his show of bowing to her, like some important figure that demanded respect. Although she demanded respect among her peers and comrades, she doubted she'd ever had expected anything from Sunil. She relaxed her posture slightly and turned herself out to face the ocean and the faraway land. "Oh yes Sunil. The world cannot revolve without you!" Her voice was dripping with sarcasm, and she smiled to herself for the thought that Sunil demanded respect in his presence and she would never grant him such a privilege. "I am not used to the new ways of the Kingdom. The old days of the war were much more exciting, much more my time." She peered over her shoulder at Sunil and sighed. "You came from that Island, didn't you?" She motioned towards it with her head, not removing her eyes from Sunil. "I'm guessing you are not the only one?"

Abyx flew over the land as a king vulture, looking down. He knew who he was looking for. He didn't know why he needed to find him but that rarely mattered. The vision had been quite clear. An image of him, but nothing else. Cryptic as usual, not that he expected different. He would just find him and then try to figure out where to go from there.
There he is. Abyx was not paticularly looking forward to this encounter, but then, given who was involved, that was likely to always be the case. He would be with someone else. This will be interesting if nothing else. Abyx gave the location a quick look with his Spirit Sight but didn't see anything out of the ordinary. At least nothing to deal with from those realms.
Abyx angled down and came in for a landing a short distance from the pair. Once he had landed, he shifted back to human form, a cold wind blowing up from nowhere that didn't move his hair any. He nodded slightly to the pair. He expected Sunil to recognize him, at least by reputation. The other? He didn't know and didn't care. His business wasn't with her.
"Traveling about I see."
Abyx caught sight of something out of his eye. He turned slightly and bowed to apparently empty air. "I will deal with that later if you do not mind?" Abyx then nods a moment later and turns back to Sunil and Riani. "Back to our discussion?"

Riani never failed to amuse him. Even after so long, she hadn’t lost her touch. At every additional purr that slipped past her lips, her body language grew steadily tenser, her eyes locked uneasily on him as though he would lunge at her the moment her eyes flickered away. For that, Sunil was too suave. His tactics were not often so straight-forward as hands-on violence when it came to making a point. He much rather preferred to speak in riddles with silk and honey, to allure and persuade, and to slowly succumb the light to darkness with shadowy fingertips tugging ever stronger. Corruption could run deep, if done properly. By the look on Riani’s face, so far his plan had been flawless.
She was not without her smart comments, but to that, the young monarch paid no mind. She seemed pleased with herself by delivering a sassy retort, and he allowed her the victory simply by standing up straight again and grinning at her with that never-ending crooked smile of his. Yet she still answered his questions when he asked them, still demanded answers to her own questions. Ahhh, so the little lamb had been lying when she said she never once thought of him. He had no doubt she dangled her legs over the side of this cliff and stared off at the shores of his island just praying he would stay there forever, and never return.
But unfortunately, Sunil could do nothing but disappoint her, there.
He tilted his head to the other side, rolling his shoulders as he glanced off in the direction of Ombra. Far enough away that a trip by boat would make a day’s effort with good winds, close enough that its jagged cliffs and volcanoes were easily in sight. “You could call it my new home of sorts.” He spoke casually, easily, and nothing in his tone gave away just what exactly lurked beyond the sea he’d just crossed to see her. It was best if the common person wasn’t in tune with his plans just yet.
Sunil parted his thin lips to answer her next question, but it seemed as though someone else was content to answer the question for him. A vulture came swooping down, and as soon as it landed, in its place came a man. Long brown hair and lacking in one eye, Sunil recognized him without knowing him. Misfits and rogues always knew each other by reputation alone on the Great Island, and Sunil had spent quite enough time amongst them to be educated in that realm. A slight frown made his usual suave grin vanish. Unfortunate that his personal time with Riani had ended so soon.
“There are times when a few mile radius and too much salt water can become a bit tedious.” he replied with an air of disregard, his black eyes focusing back on Riani when the stranger took a moment to speak to empty air. It was common knowledge that there lurked a man who spoke to the dead, and whether they were real or not, Sunil was not one to question. “I’d like you to meet my dear friend, Riani.” He spoke with the same cool tone, though the sensual purr of it had all but vanished. He flashed Riani a wicked grin. “So what brings you here, Abyx. Did you miss me as well?”

He too had turned his eyes to look at where he had come from, and Riani watched him out the corner of her eye. He was as blunt as always in his speech. Never giving away too much detail but just enough to tease. Riani just rolled her eyes to the shores and sighed. His teasing had worked. She found herself secretly wishing she could see what was across those waves, behind the sandy beach and what was hidden in the shadows of the volcanoes.
The flapping of wings distracted Riani from her thoughts and as she turned, she saw the vulture transform into a man. He was unknown to her so obviously here for Sunil. His appearance was striking, the long hair and the creepy eye patch. When her eyes flicked to see Sunil, she noticed his cheeky smirk gave way to a frown, whether it was annoyance or something else was well hidden. Riani quickly flicked her eyes back to the newcomer although she listened to Sunil whilst the newcomer spoke to himself. A smile stole itself onto her lips at Sunil's words, and she quickly turned away and hoped he hadn't seen. She listened to him introducing her and almost grunted in annoyance at being called a 'dear friend'. When she looked at him out the corner of her eyes, he flashed her his grin and she narrowed her eyes. "I am anything but that, Sunil..." she hissed through tight lips. She crossed her arms and eyed Abyx. "So I was right then. There are more people on that island." She turned her eyes back to Sunil, honestly showing her interest in the subject.

A thin frown passed over Sunil’s lips as only silence came from the strange man. By reputation, they had known each other, but no past experience existed for Sunil to attach Abyx to, so his patience quickly wore out with the newcomer. He had come here to see Riani, after all, not to talk it up with the rogues of the mainland who hadn’t made it over to Ombra yet. The man had spokespeople to do that for him; so it was easy to steer away from wanting to deal with Abyx for long. Instead, he glanced back at Riani, who apparently was not too fond of him referring to her as a friend, and he grinned again before striding over to her and taking her by the forearm – a sturdy, but not forceful grip. “Come along, little lamb. Some things are not meant for other ears.” He flashed her a dangerous look to follow him without a fight. For her own good.
Once a safe distance out of earshot from Abyx, Sunil dared to release her again. He wasn’t afraid of her running off – no. Riani would have too much curiosity through the hatred to keep her from dashing away from him just yet. He hovered over her, a predator again, and his black eyes flashed with mischief. “But of course there are others on the island, my dear. Would you expect no less?” He flashed a wolfish grin at her and took a fluid step out of her space again. There was no need to crowd her. It was clear that him being on the same island was suffocating enough, much less having him standing right in front of her again, like all those years ago. “It’s obvious you have some curiosities about my new home… if you ask nicely, maybe I’ll satisfy some of your thoughts.” Sunil grinned again.

This new silence was doing no favours to the atmosphere now. She was watching Abyx again when Sunil moved towards her and grabbed her arm. It was a different grip to what she had expected from him so she didn't pull away. The look her gave her was an obvious warning not to try anything, so she allowed him to pull her away. She tossed a quick glance over her shoulder as Abyx disappeared from their sight. When Sunil released her, he gave her an answer to her questions from before. "Sometimes, I don't know what to expect. Especially where you are involved." She flashed her own grin in his direction and as he stepped out of her way, she took a few small steps towards the way they had came.
She felt rude leaving Abyx alone, but he had made her feel weird whilst in his presence. She was glad to be away from him now. She heard Sunil over her shoulder and moved her head so she could see him out the corner of her eye. "When have you ever known me to ask nicely Sunil?" Another show of wit, which relaxed her ever so slightly. She took another glance in Abyx's direction before returning to where Sunil had stopped pulling her before. "My main curiousity has already been answered, along with a minor few." She could just see the island over Sunil's shoulder. Her mind had drawn a blank about the island, she couldn't draw on anything but one thing. "So, were you elected or did you kill your way up the ranks?"

What a strange relationship these two had. It was as though they were constantly battling in a game of tug-of-war. One would take up the rope and the other would strain, then give, before it was the other one’s turn. It was not necessarily a willing game, but one that never ceased to continue, for neither one ever crossed the final boundary. Sunil gathered up on his side of the rope and tugged, and with his assertion, Riani came willingly enough, but as soon as she gave up enough of the reins, Sunil fell into ease again, and it was Riani’s turn to tug at him. She grinned at him and played with the wit at the tip of her tongue, but her defiance did not make Sunil scowl. Instead, he barked with laughter and gave a great shrug of his bare shoulders. His relaxation seemed to quell some of her anxiety as well, and she returned to him without so much as a request.
The young man felt cooperative enough today. He felt no innate desire to terrorize Riani too much – she had too much use for him so long as the curiosity still lingered behind her crimson eyes. She was a willing enough host for his parasitic ways. So, in an attempt to showcase his temporarily turned leaf, Sunil offered to answer questions that the Fire warrioress may have. The only question she asked, however, made him raise a brow and tip his head slightly to the other side. “Neither.” He answered bluntly, and his eyes glinted again with mischief. “I am their founder, their mind. The people who live on my island with me followed me there. I was their king before civilization even took root.” He smirked and took a step forward, close enough to reach Riani without invading her privacy too much. He slowly reached out with a hand and grazed her cheek ever-so-slightly with his thumb. “It’s a shame. You would have made a fine queen.” he mused, his black eyes drifting into some level of thoughtfulness before they sprang back to life and he dropped his hand with another nonchalant shrug. “Whether you can call us a kingdom yet or not… well. The truth is in the eyes of the beholder. You could come see my home for yourself, if you are so curious.” He grinned again. “I just can’t promise you’ll ever leave.”

What he said about being the ‘mind’ of the island made Riani choke back a laugh. “That is one sick mind, then.” She muttered under her breath. Then she noticed he had stepped closer to her. That invasion of privacy always grabbed her attention. When he reached his hand up to her face, she didn’t move, allowed him to graze her cheek with his thumb as he spoke. She was concentrating on his words more than the invasion of the touch. His eyes seemed vacant for a few seconds then returned their attention to the present. She huffed her chest up slightly as she give his regret some thought. However in her thinking, she missed the other part of Sunil’s explanation and just caught the tail end, where he spoke about her going to the island for herself. That’s when Riani really started paying attention.
Her head cocked itself and she pretended to think about the decision. Within 10 seconds of pretend thinking, she looked Sunil straight in the face. “That is a big no. Thanks for the offer anyway.” Her eyes filled with humour and she crossed her arms against her chest. “And anyway, I think I‘d get annoying pretty fast. Just as you get annoying the second I‘m in your presence.”

Oh, he had missed her! There were few women from the mainland who had enough confidence to constantly harass Sunil as much as he harassed them. Though the fire warrioress hated him –for that much, he knew– she laughed as often as she scowled, and teased as often as she scolded. Riani was constantly a harbor for mixed signals, and Sunil found nothing but humor in it. Perhaps it was his suave, yet threatening persona that put her on edge and constantly made her switch between flirtatious and aggressive, or perhaps that was her innate personality. Whatever the case, Sunil absolutely loved to egg it on, his grins only growing wider and more wolfish with every passing moment.
And so it was in humor that the young Monarch invited her to his humble abode. She seemed curious enough, as told by the way she sat down at the cliffs to watch his little horizon, but Sunil was sure she would be far more comfortable being curious about it here instead of amongst the criminals and misfits themselves. He was not at all surprised by her refusal, and gave another nonchalant shrug and stepped away from her again, his black eyes scanning the woods around them.
“No matter.” he said casually. “It was only an offer, from one friend to another.” Sunil knew she hated it when he referred to her as a friend, which only provoked him to say it twice as often now. But to her next words, the young man turned about to cast a look at her that almost appeared hurt. “Annoying?” he mocked her with a pouting lower lip. He gave a little shrug again, feigning resignation. “Well, little lamb, if that’s how you feel… You shall never have to see my face again.” he took a step towards her, the resignation melting back into his confident grin. “And I will leave you to sit at your post on the cliff-side wondering what had become of me and my kingdom. And at night, you can remember how I touched you.” His grin had grown devilish and he came upon her forcefully, entering into her space and forcing her back up against a tree before reaching out and grabbing her chin to tilt her face up to meet his. He leaned down over her, his breath hot on her face. Twisted memories of years before made his eyes glint. “And you… you will miss me.”
And with that he let go and backed up a step, the brief moment dissipated and his composure flipped back to entirely nonchalant. He gave her a tip of his head and a sly grin. “It was good to see you, Riani. A shame, that we won’t be able to spend time with each other any longer.” And his legs started to carry him back towards the cliff, towards his boat and his boatsmen, where Ombra would be waiting for him as it always did.

TAKE A BREATH TAKE IT DEEP CALM YOURSELF HE SAYS TO ME IF YOU PLAY YOU PLAY FOR KEEPS TAKE THE GUN AND COUNT TO THREE & i'm sweating now moving slow no time to think my turn to go AND YOU CAN SEE MY HEART BEATING YOU CAN SEE IT THROUGH MY CHEST Oh there was always an aura of cockiness that surrounded Sunil. It never faded, only got brighter. Riani knew that Sunil only did or said something for a reaction, so she hardly dealt him one. But right now, Riani didn't know what to do. The look on his face looked like hurt but she knew better than to trust this man or his apparent emotions. That then changed to some emotion that Riani never cared for. The way he moved towards her made her back up one step, but it wasn't enough to keep him at bay. He forced her against a tree and held her there, his hand forcing her head towards him and she couldn't stop herself from staring at him.
It felt like hours before he spoke again and let her go, and she gasped as if she had been choked until the brink of darkness. She wrenched her eyes away from him and wiped her face, as if the action could remove any trace of him. She heard him speak, normally as if what had happened not 5 seconds ago had not occurred. Out the corner of her, she saw him start back towards the cliff, and something in her boiled up. She stood herself rigidly straight and started after him slowly. "If anyone misses anyone, you miss me. Is that not why you came back? To indulge yourself in my presence? Your little play things not as good as me over in your kingdom that you come back looking for the one thing that makes you happy." She had caught up to him and one finger danced along one shoulder, across his back, to his other shoulder and away as she passed. "You annoy me. That's what you love. But you hate that you love it. And you know that it's the same for me. We will never part ways for the final time." She caught his arm and whispered in his ear, "And you know it..." Then, she backed away, a cheeky look crossed her face and she turned out towards the cliff with her arms crossed.
